Entrepreneurial Initiative

BD09 Motivation & Drive
Derived LayerMML-2

Version v1.2.4

Definition

A tendency to create opportunities, ventures, and resources where none are obvious, initiating projects, deals, networks, and new pathways.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Rarely initiates new directions; prefers pre-existing tracks and given opportunities.

High Pole

Frequently generates and realizes new options—projects, partnerships, products, resource channels.

Reference

Entrepreneurial within one domain; cautious outside competence or network boundaries.

Measure

Primary: Generation Rate — rate at which new viable opportunities are initiated and brought into reality.

Measuring Methods

Initiative portfolio over time + scenario tasks: “no resources → create resources,” scored for feasibility and execution steps.

Empirical Anchor

Entrepreneurial initiative / entrepreneurial orientation (Lumpkin & Dess, 1996); proactive personality in entrepreneurship (Crant, 1996).

Notes

Broader than initiative drive (D011): includes external opportunity creation and resource mobilization, not only “starting actions.”
