Effort Sustainment

B01 Attention & Processing
Core LayerMML-2

Version v1.3.2

Definition

A baseline capacity to maintain directed, goal-relevant effort over time, especially when progress is slow or invisible, rewards are delayed, the work is monotonous or demanding, and competing alternatives are available.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Effort fragility: drive and willingness to continue drop rapidly; frequent stopping, postponing, task-hopping, and early quitting at the first friction point. External pressure, oversight, or hard deadlines are often required to sustain engagement.

High Pole

Effort can be carried for long stretches despite slow feedback. The person can push through boredom, resistance, uncertainty, and fatigue while keeping direction and tempo.

Reference

Sustains effort well in familiar work, but long, ambiguous, or aversive phases require structure, breaks, support, or deliberate task chunking.

Measure

Duration—time a person can maintain continuous functional effort on a specified task until a protocol-defined “break” (effort collapse, e.g., quality/tempo drop below threshold, off-task drift, refusal to continue).

Measuring Methods

• Long-duration tasks with minimal immediate reward and explicit break criteria.
• Compare time-to-break under matched difficulty and controlled conditions (sleep, load, distractions).

Empirical Anchor

Ego depletion / self-control resource model (Baumeister et al., 1998); effortful control (Rothbart & Bates, 2006); grit-adjacent persistence (Duckworth et al., 2007).

Notes

• Risks at MAX: resource overuse, ignoring fatigue signals.
• Risks at MIN: chronic non-completion, dependence on external pressure, erosion of self-efficacy.
• Differs from C001Attentional Stability (one may hold focus but fail to sustain effort, and vice versa).
• Differs from C016Task Completion Tendency (process endurance vs. closure tendency).
