Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Surface-level thinking: stops at the most immediate explanation, misses hidden factors, and in complex systems errs due to under-modeling.
Naturally builds multi-layered models: reasons, links, constraints, downstream consequences. Better at anticipating “what happens next” and where hidden bottlenecks lie.
Adequate depth for routine contexts; depth increases with interest and time, and decreases under time pressure.
Measure
Measuring Methods
• “Why / what next / what if” probes: test robustness under counterexamples and refinements.
Empirical Anchor
Notes
• Risks at MIN: systematic blind spots in complex systems, susceptibility to simplistic narratives.
• Differs from C004Information Processing Speed (pace and depth are separable).
