Definition

A propensity to start actions and propose solutions without external prompting or explicit assignment.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Reactive posture: waits to be tasked; rarely proposes or self-starts.

High Pole

High self-starting: consistently identifies opportunities and initiates action toward outcomes.

Reference

Self-starts in familiar domains but hesitates in novel systems or under evaluative risk.

Measure

Frequency: count of self-initiated actions/solutions over a period.
• Novelty: proportion of initiatives that are non-routine (beyond template responses).

Measuring Methods

Initiative logs (proposal → action → result), supervisor/team ratings, artifact evidence (improvements shipped).

Empirical Anchor

Personal initiative (Frese & Fay, 2001); proactive behavior (Bateman & Crant, 1993); self-starting.

Notes

Initiative is not mere activity; it implies directed action toward value or resolution.
