Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Easily caught in rumination loops; unable to disengage; rumination dominates mental space for hours or days; interferes with functioning.
Early detection of rumination onset; deploys effective interruption strategies (distraction, cognitive reappraisal, mindfulness, action); returns to productive engagement quickly.
Can interrupt rumination in mild cases but struggles under high stress or with personally significant triggers.

Secondary: Recurrence Rate — frequency of return to same rumination theme after interruption.
