Definition

The ability to learn how to learn in a new domain; to analyze the structure of a knowledge domain, identify effective learning strategies for that domain, monitor one’s own learning process, and adapt strategies for optimal acquisition.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Uses the same learning approach regardless of domain; persists with ineffective strategies; unable to articulate how they learn best; slow adaptation to new types of material.

High Pole

Rapidly analyzes a new domain’s structure (conceptual vs procedural, hierarchical vs networked); selects and tests learning strategies accordingly; monitors comprehension and retention in real time; iteratively refines approach.

Reference

Has some meta-awareness of learning but applies it inconsistently; may have one or two favored strategies that work across many but not all domains.

Measure

Primary: Strategy Flexibility — number and appropriateness of learning strategies employed across different domain types.
Secondary: Learning Efficiency — rate of mastery relative to time invested, compared to baseline.

Measuring Methods

Present learner with two structurally different domains (e.g., conceptual taxonomy vs procedural skill) → observe strategy selection and adaptation → measure time-to-criterion and retention.

Empirical Anchor

Meta-learning skill / learning to learn (Biggs, 1985); metacognitive strategies; self-regulated learning (Zimmerman, 2002).

Notes

Distinct from Learning Agility (D044): D044 is speed of learning within a given context; D150 is the meta-skill of selecting and adapting learning approaches across contexts.
