Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Metacognitive blindness: rarely notices errors in reasoning; confidence is weakly related to actual correctness; cannot explain how a conclusion was reached.
Continuously monitors thoughts; quickly notices contradictions; confidence is well-calibrated; can describe the reasoning process.
Episodic awareness; in complex situations, metacognition shuts down.
