Definition

Capacity to move beyond surface narratives and analyze mechanisms, causes, and patterns in one’s behavior and inner state.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Shallow self-explanations; weak causal insight; repeated blind spots.

High Pole

Mechanism-level understanding; accurate pattern recognition; actionable self-updating.

Reference

Reflects at the story level more than mechanism level.

Measure

Primary: Depth.
Secondary: Insight (causal-mechanistic understanding).

Measuring Methods

Reflective reports and case debriefs → score causal depth and specificity.

Empirical Anchor

Depth of reflection / reflective functioning (Fonagy et al., 1998); reflective judgment (King & Kitchener, 1994); self-reflection capacity.

Notes

Not merely “self-awareness”; the core is mechanistic reflection with actionable conclusions.
