Definition

The capacity to learn fast in novel conditions: grasp rules, incorporate feedback, and improve in real time.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Slow rule acquisition; repeated errors; weak adaptation to feedback.

High Pole

Rapid rule extraction; swift behavioral updates; steep learning curve early.

Reference

Learns steadily but needs repetition and guidance.

Measure

Primary: Speed (rate of improvement on a learning curve).
Secondary: Error rate (how quickly errors decline).

Measuring Methods

Novel task + repeated trials + feedback → quantify learning-curve slope and error dynamics.

Empirical Anchor

Learning agility (DeRue et al., 2012; Lombardo & Eichinger, 2000); adaptive learning; knowledge acquisition rate.

Notes

Not the same as D045 (transfer): this is within-environment adaptation, not cross-domain generalization.
