Version v1.2.4

Definition

The degree to which a person has explicitly articulated, prioritized, and internalized their personal values, enabling value-congruent decision-making.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Vague, unexamined, or conflicting values; decisions driven by impulse or social pressure.

High Pole

Clear, coherent value hierarchy; values actively guide choices and provide stability under pressure.

Reference

Values are present but not fully articulated or prioritized; may conflict in novel situations.

Measure

Primary: Articulation — ability to state personal values and their priority order.
Secondary: Congruence — alignment between stated values and observed decisions.

Measuring Methods

Values elicitation tasks + decision audits comparing choices to stated values.

Empirical Anchor

Value clarity / values clarification (Simon et al., 1972); value commitment; personal value system coherence.

Notes

Value clarity is a meta-cognitive skill that supports integrity and reduces internal conflict.
