Definition

The capacity to bring conflict to a stable resolution by way of clarified rules, agreements, repairs, and boundary updates that prevent recurrence.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Conflicts repeat; tails remain; resentment accumulates.

High Pole

Root causes are addressed and formalized into stable agreements.

Reference

Strong at work conflicts; weaker in intimate relationships (or vice versa).

Measure

Primary: Recurrence Rate — frequency with which the same conflict theme returns after “resolution.”

Measuring Methods

Longitudinal tracking of conflict themes + agreement adherence checks.

Empirical Anchor

Conflict resolution skill / conflict management (Rahim, 1983); constructive conflict resolution; mediation competence.

Notes

Avoidance lowers visibility, not recurrence.
