Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Non-assertiveness: struggles to state and hold a position under pressure; yields quickly or avoids confrontation.
States and holds position easily; can conduct difficult conversations and insist when needed.
Present but context-dependent: varies with opponent status, fatigue, and issue importance.
Measure
Measuring Methods
• Behavioral markers: refusals, requests, saying “no,” boundary maintenance.
• Conflict observation: persistence without disintegration.
Empirical Anchor
Notes
• Risks at MIN: chronic yielding, resentment accumulation.
• Risks at MAX: rigidity, reduced flexibility, social collisions.
