Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Conflict avoidance: conflict feels too unsafe; the person exits, shuts down, yields, or cuts contact.
Can hold conflict calmly; discusses hard topics, maintains a line, and stays engaged.
Conflict is unpleasant but tolerable; the person can stay with tension on important issues.
Measure
Measuring Methods
• Real-conflict audit: time-to-avoidance or time-to-escalation.
• Observation: ability to stay in dialogue under disagreement.
Empirical Anchor
Notes
• Risks at MIN: chronic yielding, unresolved problems.
• Risks at MAX: habituation to conflict, reduced sensitivity to others’ boundaries.
