Achievement Striving

BD09 Motivation & Drive
Derived LayerMML-1

Version v1.2.4

Definition

A focus on measurable accomplishment and improvement; mastery orientation expressed through progress metrics and performance gains.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Low pull toward measurable improvement; prefers “good enough” without raising standards.

High Pole

Systematically pursues improvement and demonstrable results; builds routines for skill and performance growth.

Reference

Pushes hard in priority domains without turning life into constant optimization.

Measure

Primary: Rate — stability and frequency of intentional progress (metrics/skills/outcomes) within selected domains.

Measuring Methods

Portfolio and performance tracking + preference tests: comfort maintenance vs improvement efforts under matched payoffs.

Empirical Anchor

Achievement striving / conscientiousness — achievement striving facet (Costa & McCrae, 1992); achievement motivation (Atkinson, 1957).

Notes

Not identical to discipline: you can be disciplined without growth orientation, and growth-oriented without strong discipline.
