Definition

A tendency to enter, escalate, or persist in interpersonal clashes more often than context objectively requires.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Low conflict frequency; prefers alignment and de-escalation.

High Pole

High conflict frequency; escalation is common even when alternatives exist.

Reference

Conflict is theme-dependent (status, principles, disrespect cues).

Measure

Primary: Frequency — number of conflict episodes per period under comparable exposure.

Measuring Methods

Diary tracking + third-party confirmation where possible; classify severity and triggers.

Empirical Anchor

Conflict proneness / trait aggressiveness — hostility facet (Buss & Perry, 1992); hostile attribution bias (Dodge & Coie, 1987).

Notes

Not identical to directness; directness can reduce conflict if used early and cleanly.
