Frustration Expression Style

B05 Emotional Core
Core LayerMML-2

Version v1.3.2

Definition

Where frustration energy tends to go when goals are blocked: outward (blame, pressure, irritability toward people/the world) versus inward (self-blame, suppression, swallowing).

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Internalizing style: frustration goes inward—suppression, self-criticism, withdrawal, “I’m the problem.”

High Pole

Externalizing style: frustration goes outward—blame, pressure, irritability, escalation.

Reference

Mixed and context-dependent; generally regulatable.

Measure

Direction predominance—the outward-to-inward ratio across typical frustration episodes.

Measuring Methods

• Mild frustration scenarios with coded response direction.
• Diary: “when frustrated, where did it go?” (outward/inward).
• Field observation in conflict contexts: language, behavior, somatic cues.

Empirical Anchor

Anger expression styles — AX index (Spielberger, 1988); anger-in/anger-out construct.

Notes

• Not identical to aggressiveness: outward frustration can be soft (pressure, reproach) or sharp (outburst).
• Risks at MIN: suppression load, somatic spillover.
• Risks at MAX: relationship damage, conflict escalation.
