Constraint Creativity

BD05 Creativity & Innovation
Derived LayerMML-4

Version v1.2.4

Definition

The capacity to produce strong solutions under strict limits of resources, rules, or time.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Constraints collapse performance; frames limits as excuses; sharp quality drop.

High Pole

Uses constraints as structure; finds surprising, effective solutions under scarcity.

Reference

Performs under constraints but needs extra time/support.

Measure

Primary: Utility.
Secondary: Novelty.

Measuring Methods

Constraint-heavy challenges → evaluate solution quality and novelty under fixed limits.

Empirical Anchor

Constraint creativity / creativity under constraint; structured imagination (Ward, 1994); design thinking under limitations.

Notes

Related to resourcefulness (D023) but more explicitly creative: emphasis on solution quality, not mere escape.
