Definition

The capacity to generate novel ideas and approaches beyond standard templates.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Template-bound thinking; few new options; strong aversion to “wrong” ideas.

High Pole

Consistently produces non-obvious approaches; reframes problems; creates new solution spaces.

Reference

Produces some new ideas, but often as variations on familiar patterns.

Measure

Primary: Novelty.
Secondary: Utility.

Measuring Methods

Divergent-ideation tasks + independent ratings of novelty and usefulness against explicit criteria.

Empirical Anchor

Creativity / divergent thinking (Guilford, 1967); creative cognition (Finke et al., 1992); Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking.

Notes

Broader than originality: creativity includes productivity and applicability, not only distinctiveness.
