Definition

Ability to construct and iteratively refine simple causal models sufficient for decisions (not perfect theories).

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Fragmented facts; weak causality; models don’t predict or guide action.

High Pole

Builds a simple causal scheme fast, tests it, and updates based on evidence.

Reference

Builds models, but they are often either too complex or too simplistic.

Measure

Primary: Coherence.
Secondary: Accuracy.

Measuring Methods

Case → model → prediction → new data → iterative refinement scoring.

Empirical Anchor

Model-building skill / mental model construction (Johnson-Laird, 1983); schema formation; conceptual modeling.

Notes

Overlaps with systems thinking, but applies to causal models broadly, not only feedback systems.
