Definition

A baseline capacity to detect latent regularities, like repeating structures and statistical signals, before explicit reasoning or verbal articulation; the ability to sense “order in noise” at an intuitive level.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Low pattern sensitivity: regularities are detected late or weakly; more data and explicit analysis are required before structure becomes apparent.

High Pole

Patterns are picked up quickly, including weak statistical signals. The person may “feel” that something is structured or anomalous before being able to explain why.

Reference

Patterns become visible when data are sufficient or structure is fairly strong; subtle signals are harder to detect.

Measure

Detection threshold—the minimum signal strength (given a defined noise level) required for reliable above-chance pattern detection.

Measuring Methods

• Statistical learning / hidden-rule paradigms: vary signal strength and estimate threshold for reliable detection.
• Noisy sequence tasks: measure sensitivity to repetition and structure under controlled noise.

Empirical Anchor

Implicit learning (Reber, 1967); statistical learning (Saffran et al., 1996); intuitive judgment (Kahneman, 2011).

Notes

• Risks at MAX: false positives—seeing structure where there is little; premature conclusions.
• Risks at MIN: late trend/anomaly detection; slower adaptation to recurring structure.
• Differs from C005Thinking Depth (early pattern sensing vs. explicit causal modeling).
