Definition

Ability to form a usable picture from incomplete/conflicting data and update it as evidence evolves.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Freezes or closes prematurely; confuses signal and noise.

High Pole

Holds multiple hypotheses; updates cleanly; builds workable temporary models.

Reference

Builds a picture, but tends to close ambiguity too early.

Measure

Primary: Coherence.
Secondary: Calibration (model alignment with reality).

Measuring Methods

Staged ambiguous cases → measure hypothesis updating and model quality over time.

Empirical Anchor

Sensemaking under ambiguity (Weick, 1995); naturalistic decision-making in complex environments (Klein et al., 1993).
