Definition

Ability to notice meaningful signals, details, and shifts in people and environments while filtering noise.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Misses key cues; notices late; substitutes assumptions for observation.

High Pole

Detects subtle but relevant changes; separates signal from noise reliably.

Reference

Catches the obvious; subtle cues are inconsistent.

Measure

Primary: Sensitivity (response to weak signals).
Secondary: Selectivity (noise filtering).

Measuring Methods

Scene/video/simulation detection tasks → measure detection accuracy and latency under distractors.

Empirical Anchor

Observational acuity / perceptual accuracy; observational skill; attention to environmental cues.

Notes

Can overlap with social sensitivity; here the scope is broader than social cues alone.
