Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Threat detection insensitivity: threat cues are detected late; early risk signals are often missed, leading to avoidable trouble.
Threat cues are detected very early; the person quickly flags potential danger and adjusts behavior preventively.
Obvious threats are detected well; subtle cues vary with context and fatigue.
Measure
Measuring Methods
• Error logs: how often risk is noticed only after consequences.
• Observation in novel environments: scanning speed and preventive moves.
Empirical Anchor
Notes
• Risks at MIN: losses/injury via late detection.
• Risks at MAX: hypervigilance, anxiety load, depletion.
