Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Short time-horizon orientation: rapid loss of commitment when payoffs are delayed; frequent strategic pivots driven by impatience rather than new evidence.
High long-range endurance: sustained pursuit over years with stable direction, consistent effort, and psychologically tolerable waiting.
Able to hold a course for months, but typically needs periodic “milestone payoffs” or external confirmation to stay locked in.
Measure
• Consistency: steadiness of direction and effort over time (low oscillation, low abandonment rate).
