Version v1.2.4

Definition

Sustained perseverance through setbacks, friction, and fluctuating motivation, with continued re-engagement after failure rather than chronic quitting.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Early dropout under difficulty: effort collapses when resistance appears; avoidance replaces persistence.

High Pole

Stable endurance: continues despite repeated setbacks, boredom, and slow progress, without major functional breakdown.

Reference

Can persist, but tends to “fall off the rail” during prolonged adversity or when external structure disappears.

Measure

Duration: time maintained on a difficult task under resistance.
• Recovery: speed and completeness of return to effort after a setback or slip.

Measuring Methods

Repeated challenge tasks (with dropout tracking), analysis of long projects under friction, and longitudinal “return after failure” markers (behavioral evidence, not intent).

Empirical Anchor

Grit (Duckworth et al., 2007); perseverance and passion for long-term goals; Grit-S scale.

Notes

Distinct from D001: D001 is primarily about time horizon and strategic course; D002 is about endurance through resistance.
