Definition

Fast, experience-shaped pattern recognition that yields high-quality decisions within one’s expertise domain.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Weak pattern detection; slow or low-quality domain decisions.

High Pole

Rapid extraction of the core pattern; accurate decisions under limited data.

Reference

Strong on typical cases; degrades on atypical cases.

Measure

Primary: Accuracy.
Secondary: Latency (time-to-first-good decision).

Measuring Methods

Domain case batteries → score accuracy and decision latency.

Empirical Anchor

Professional intuition / expert intuition (Klein, 1998); recognition-primed decision-making; domain-specific pattern recognition.
