Definition

A baseline rate at which a person perceives, recognizes, and integrates new information in simple, well-structured situations (text, instructions, explanations) in which rules are clear.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Processing slowness: information lands slowly, understanding takes longer, correct application lags. When pace increases, the thread is easily lost.

High Pole

Meaning and structure are grasped quickly. Correct application begins rapidly and can be sustained at a higher information tempo without marked loss of accuracy.

Reference

Comfortable at ordinary pace; begins to lag under acceleration, fatigue, or competing load.

Measure

Speed—time to correct understanding and/or correct application of new information in a controlled simple task.

Measuring Methods

• Timed comprehension/recognition tasks with accuracy control.
• Protocol: instruction → execution; measure time to stable correct performance.

Empirical Anchor

Processing speed as cognitive primitive (Salthouse, 1996); inspection time (Deary & Stough, 1996); P300 latency measures.

Notes

• Risks at MAX: skipping verification, premature confidence.
• Risks at MIN: chronic lag, overload, secondary effects on confidence.
• Differs from C005Thinking Depth (fast intake ≠ deep modeling).
