Definition

The capacity to build and maintain a durable network of weak ties without immediate transactional payoff, preserving mutual value over time.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Connections decay; contact occurs only when something is needed.

High Pole

Network stays alive: regular touchpoints, value exchange, credible introductions.

Reference

Good at initiating; weaker at maintenance (or vice versa).

Measure

Primary: Stability — proportion of ties that remain active and reciprocal over time.

Measuring Methods

Network audit: contact frequency, reciprocity, repeat interactions; control for industry and baseline opportunity.

Empirical Anchor

Networking skill / social capital building (Burt, 1992; Lin, 2001); networking behavior (Wolff & Moser, 2009).

Notes

Distinct from charisma: networking is structure and maintenance, not presence alone.
