Definition

The degree to which others experience the person as socially safe to approach, initiate contact with, and speak openly to.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Perceived as cold, closed, or risky; people avoid contact.

High Pole

Perceived as safe and easy to approach; contact initiates naturally.

Reference

Warm in familiar circles; distant under stress or with outsiders.

Measure

Primary: Approach Rate — frequency with which others initiate contact under comparable conditions.

Measuring Methods

Group observation + independent ratings of approachability; control status and role.

Empirical Anchor

Warmth and approachability / interpersonal warmth (Fiske et al., 2007); communion dimension (Abele & Wojciszke, 2007).

Notes

Warmth is style; it does not guarantee empathy accuracy.
