Version v1.2.4

Definition

A tendency to explore through safe experimentation: trying, failing, iterating without excessive threat response.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Error-avoidant; avoids experiments; stuck in “right vs wrong.”

High Pole

Iterates quickly; treats error as information; explores without dramatization.

Reference

Playful in low-stakes contexts; constricted in high-stakes contexts.

Measure

Primary: Risk tolerance (within experimentation).
Secondary: Rate (iteration frequency).

Measuring Methods

Rapid-cycle experimentation tasks → count iterations and track stability under failure.

Empirical Anchor

Playful thinking / cognitive playfulness (Webster & Martocchio, 1992); play as exploration (Bateson & Martin, 2013).

Notes

Not frivolity: the core is experimentation in service of improvement.
