Definition

Readiness to think, speak, and publish against prevailing views when logic and evidence warrant it, despite social or reputational risk.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Conforms under pressure; avoids stating true beliefs when disagreement carries social cost.

High Pole

Can dissent cleanly and constructively; separates truth claims from belonging needs.

Reference

Dissents privately, but softens or stays silent publicly in higher-risk contexts.

Measure

Threshold: level of social/reputational risk at which dissent collapses.
• Frequency: rate of principled dissent when warranted.

Measuring Methods

Behavioral history (public stances vs incentives); structured dissent simulations; peer reports on truth-speaking under pressure.

Empirical Anchor

Intellectual courage (Paul & Elder, 2006); willingness to challenge established views; epistemic courage.

Notes

Not contrarianism. Intellectual courage is evidence-driven dissent, not reflexive opposition.
