Definition

A default reliance on evidence, explicit reasoning, and comparison of alternatives, especially when stakes are meaningful.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Decisions driven by impulse, social pressure, or narrative comfort with minimal evidence handling.

High Pole

Uses structured reasoning when appropriate: alternatives, criteria, trade-offs, and clear justification.

Reference

Rational in professional contexts, but reverts to bias-driven choices in personal or identity-linked areas.

Measure

Clarity: explicitness of criteria and reasoning.
• Fidelity: consistency between stated evidence and the decision taken.

Measuring Methods

Decision write-ups (criteria, options, evidence); audit of post-hoc rationalizations; peer review of decision memos.

Empirical Anchor

Rational decision style (Scott & Bruce, 1995); deliberative decision-making; analytic cognitive style.

Notes

Not anti-intuition: rational style can incorporate intuition as a hypothesis, then test it.
