Pain-of-Effort Tolerance

BD02 Stress, Robustness & Recovery
Derived LayerMML-4

Version v1.2.4

Definition

The ability to endure the subjective discomfort of effort and continue doing what is necessary despite internal resistance.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Avoids effort quickly: discomfort triggers switching to easier/pleasurable options and rationalized delay.

High Pole

High tolerance: can sustain hard effort without repeated internal “breaks,” excuse-making, or flight.

Reference

Can tolerate effort mainly with strong external structure or unusually high personal meaning.

Measure

Threshold: level of felt effort-discomfort that causes cessation or escape.
• Duration: how long effort is sustained under persistent discomfort.

Measuring Methods

Long-effort tasks; dropout/escape markers; boredom/monotony tolerance protocols; effort diaries anchored to behavior.

Empirical Anchor

Effort tolerance / tolerance for effortful activity; need for cognition effort component (Cacioppo & Petty, 1982); effort discounting.

Notes

Not identical to D002Grit: grit is perseverance through obstacles; this is tolerance of internal effort aversion.
