Definition

A tendency to over-monitor details and resist delegation or release of control, often at the expense of speed, trust, and scalability.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Flexible control: monitors key variables, releases non-critical details, delegates effectively.

High Pole

Micromanagement pattern: low tolerance for uncertainty; pervasive checking and intervention.

Reference

Overcontrol activates in high-stakes or public-evaluation contexts, but not consistently elsewhere.

Measure

Frequency: rate of unnecessary interventions into controllable-by-others details.
• Coverage: proportion of domains where the person “cannot let go.”

Measuring Methods

Delegation audits; team interviews; process metrics (number of checkpoints, approval bottlenecks).
