Version v1.2.4

Definition

The ability to craft and deliver effective apologies that repair trust, acknowledge harm, and restore relationship function.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Apologies are vague, defensive, or absent; may say “sorry” without acknowledgment of specific harm; triggers further conflict rather than repair.

High Pole

Delivers timely, specific, and sincere apologies that acknowledge harm, take responsibility, explain without excusing, offer repair, and commit to change.

Reference

Can apologize effectively in low-stakes situations but struggles with complex or high-stakes transgressions; may omit key elements.

Measure

Primary: Repair Effectiveness — degree of trust restoration and relationship function improvement following apology.
Secondary: Component Completion — presence of key apology elements (acknowledgment, responsibility, explanation, repair offer, behavioral commitment).

Measuring Methods

Standardized transgression scenarios with apology coding; real-world tracking of post-apology relationship indicators.

Empirical Anchor

Apology skill / effective apology components (Lewicki et al., 2016); account-giving; relational repair.

Notes

Distinct from D092Trust Repair Skill (broader process); apology is a specific component of trust repair.
