Definition

The capacity to accurately model another person’s inner state: what they think, feel, want, and fear, without requiring emotional contagion.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Low cognitive empathy: struggles to infer others’ motives and states; frequent misreads; context is often missed.

High Pole

Rapid and accurate mental-state reconstruction; strong prediction of reactions and hidden motives.

Reference

Generally adequate understanding, with errors under complexity or conflict.

Measure

Reading accuracy—how correctly the person identifies others’ states from limited cues.

Measuring Methods

• Standardized intention/emotion inference tasks using short scenes.
• Accuracy of real-case predictions (“what will they feel/do next”).
• Ethical cross-checking against the target’s self-report when appropriate.

Empirical Anchor

Cognitive empathy / perspective-taking (Davis, 1983); theory of mind (Baron-Cohen, 1995); mentalizing (Frith & Frith, 2006).

Notes

• Distinct from C059Affective Empathy: one may understand without strongly feeling.
• Risks at MAX: manipulative use of insight; “cold” social strategy.
• Risks at MIN: social errors, conflict, misunderstanding.
