Definition

A disposition to inflict pain through verbal or behavioral means as an acceptable instrument or as a source of gratification/release.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Avoids causing pain; seeks low-harm influence even in conflict.

High Pole

Readily uses humiliation, harsh punishment, and excessive harm; may derive satisfaction from others’ suffering.

Reference

Generally non-cruel but may slip into humiliating behavior under high frustration or in toxic environments.

Measure

Primary: Willingness — willingness to use pain as a means when alternatives exist.

Measuring Methods

Ethical vignettes assessing harm acceptability; research must rely on safe proxies (no real harm).

Empirical Anchor

Cruelty proneness / sadistic personality (Buckels et al., 2013); everyday sadism; Dark Tetrad — sadism.

Notes

Do not confuse with firmness/discipline: cruelty implies excessive or enjoyed harm.
