Version v1.3.2

Definition

The degree of emotional resonance with another’s experience; how much one “feels with” them.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Low affective empathy: muted resonance; others’ pain/joy feels faint.

High Pole

Strong resonance; others’ emotions readily shift the person’s own state.

Reference

Resonance is present but typically regulatable and not function-breaking.

Measure

Response amplitude to another’s emotional state under comparable stimulus.

Measuring Methods

• Short emotional narratives/scenes → pre/post affect change.
• Behavioral markers: supportive actions, vocal/face shifts.
• Before/after exposure to intense emotions in others.

Empirical Anchor

Affective empathy / emotional empathy (Mehrabian & Epstein, 1972); empathic concern (Batson, 1991); mirror neuron system (Rizzolatti & Craighero, 2004).

Notes

• High affective empathy without regulation can be depleting.
• Risks at MIN: relational coldness; weak support.
• Risks at MAX: secondary stress, helper burnout.
