Emotional Containment

BD07 Empathy & Prosociality
Derived LayerMML-3

Version v1.2.4

Definition

The capacity to remain steady and supportive in the presence of others’ intense emotions without collapsing, fleeing, or invalidating.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Either escalates, withdraws, or dismisses; interaction becomes unsafe.

High Pole

Maintains calm clarity; helps the other return to functional dialogue.

Reference

Strong with close others; weaker with hostile or manipulative affect.

Measure

Primary: Stability — preservation of one’s own calm and cognitive coherence during the other’s emotional surge.

Measuring Methods

High-affect scenarios → judge stability, response quality, and outcome (soothing vs escalation).

Empirical Anchor

Emotional containment / affect suppression strategy (Gross, 1998); emotional labor — surface acting (Hochschild, 1983).

Notes

More specific than general composure: this is composure-in-contact.
