Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Emotion dominates: intensity and expression are poorly controlled; decisions become emotion-driven and impulsive.
Flexible modulation: can downshift intensity, redirect arousal, choose expression strategically, and preserve goal-directed behavior.
Regulates well in calm conditions, but under strong triggers either suppresses rigidly or “leaks” explosively.
Measure
• Recovery: speed of return to functional baseline after spikes.
