Core LayerMML-2

Version v1.3.2

Definition

How readily a person detects and responds affectively to aesthetic properties of environments and objects: form, color, composition, sound, rhythm, texture, beauty/ugliness, harmony/disharmony.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Aesthetic insensitivity: aesthetic parameters are barely registered; beauty/disharmony have little impact on attention, mood, or choice.

High Pole

Aesthetic cues are detected vividly and automatically; beauty/disharmony meaningfully shape mood, focus, preferences, and decisions.

Reference

Aesthetics are noticed and can please or irritate, but typically do not dominate functional considerations.

Measure

Aesthetic detection threshold: how subtle an aesthetic difference the person reliably notices and consistently prefers.

Measuring Methods

• Discrimination tasks with graded visual/musical differences → accuracy and preference stability.
• Choice observation across equally functional options (clothing, interiors, soundscape, visual style).
• Self-report validated by behavior: does aesthetics move mood/attention?

Empirical Anchor

Aesthetic sensitivity (Myszkowski et al., 2018); openness to aesthetics (Costa & McCrae, 1992); sensory processing sensitivity — aesthetic subscale (Aron & Aron, 1997).

Notes

• Distinct from C041Positive Reward Reactivity: aesthetic response can be subtle and not tied to praise or success.
• Risks at MIN: reduced sensory feedback; weak sensitivity to environmental quality.
• Risks at MAX: disharmony overload; sensory fatigue.
