Definition

An acute episode elicited by appraising that available efforts cannot change an impending negative outcome, producing abrupt collapse of approach motivation and a shift toward withdrawal or urgent reliance on external support.

Mechanism

Futility-detector signals that no available action can alter the outcome; approach motivation collapses and help-signaling activates.

Trigger–Appraisal–Function

• Trigger: Appraisal that efforts cannot change an impending negative outcome.
• Appraisal: “No viable path; nothing will work.”
• Function: Terminate futile striving and signal need for external rescue/reframing.

Observable Output

• Collapse of approach motivation; withdrawal; reduced initiative.
• Cognitive narrowing to impossibility; difficulty generating options.
