Definition

A tendency to remain true to one’s genuine beliefs and felt experience rather than chronically perform for approval, with low sustained masking.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

High masking: strong approval-dependence and frequent social adaptation at the cost of inner split.

High Pole

Low masking: expresses self and holds position without chronic social camouflage, while still respecting context.

Reference

Authentic in close circles, strongly performative in high-status or unsafe contexts.

Measure

Primary: Congruence — alignment between inner stance (beliefs/feelings) and outward expression/behavior in consequential situations.

Measuring Methods

Compare stated values/positions to observed actions across contexts; “masking diary” with contextual justification.

Notes

Authenticity is not bluntness: one can be authentic and tactful.
