Definition

Sensitivity to others’ vulnerabilities and boundaries; avoiding needless relational injury by means of form and timing.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Frequently “cuts” people unintentionally; tone and framing cause preventable damage.

High Pole

Accurately senses boundaries; chooses form that protects dignity while preserving truth.

Reference

Present when resourced; collapses under fatigue/irritation.

Measure

Primary: Boundary Sensitivity — frequency and severity of avoidable boundary violations in matched contexts.

Measuring Methods

Scenario dialogues + partner ratings; control cultural norms.

Empirical Anchor

Tact / social sensitivity in communication; face-saving (Brown & Levinson, 1987); politeness theory.

Notes

Tact is not softness: one can be tactful and firm.
