Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Low status seeking: status matters little; comfortable in the background; low need for recognition.
Status matters greatly; seeks recognition, prestige markers, and top positions.
Status matters in certain domains (e.g., career) but does not dominate life.

• Behavioral analysis: how often recognition is sought or displayed.
• Career history: role choices driven by rank.
Empirical Anchor
Notes
• Risks at MIN: low visibility within hierarchies.
• Risks at MAX: dependence on external evaluation; status-driven conflict.
